MY EYES DEVOUR THE INTERNET (2025-2026)
FOR CLARINET, SAMPLER, VIOLIN, CELLO, and fixed electronics and video
length: 25 minutes
My Eyes Devour the Internet is a song cycle for Vocaloid and chamber ensemble that reflects on the experience of growing up alongside the internet. Drawing inspiration from early 2000s online culture, a guerilla approach to blogs, forums, anime, and internet humor.
For this piece, the keyboard player plays the role of the ‘vocaloid’, a voice-synthesis software popularized in the early 2000s that functions both as an instrument and as a virtual performer. Unlike a traditional singer, a Vocaloid voice can be used by anyone, anywhere, and can write music under the same moniker, under the same ‘voice’, under the same avatar.
Through a series of songs that blend nostalgia, humor, authorship, and control, My Eyes Devour the Internet is ultimately about growing up on the internet, both the positive and the negative, an homage to the humanness inside digital culture.
