MY VOICE IS A BROKEN CHORUS (2022)
for amplified SOPRANO AND FIXED ELECTRONICS
length: 9 mins
‘My Voice is a Broken Chorus’ is a piece that I made obsessed with the idea of this ‘shattered’ identity, or how multiplicity sounds. When I first started writing the piece I was obsessively listening to two things: One of them was hocketed music (music where two or more performers are constantly alternating the pitches or sounds of a musical idea), and videos of people using tiny samples from different sources to make composite melodies.
I was instantly fascinated with the idea of recreating this in a live setting, so I asked Charlotte Mundy to record herself doing different pitched and unpitched sounds, which I used to create a fixed electronic version of herself to hocket against. Many thanks to Charlotte Mundy for being an amazing collaborator and musician.
